Boy Racers Cause Chaos in Blackburn

Boy Racers Causing Chaos in Blackburn Boy racers are causing chaos in Blackburn as they try and clock up a 39 high score 39 on an interactive speeding sign. The sign flashes up the speed of an approaching vehicle, and racers are using it to judge games between each other. Local residents have expressed massive concern over the drivers, who they say are destined to cause an accident. The boy racers are trying to get to 100mph to make the sign blow up. It rsquo s ridiculous, someone is going to get killed. It rsquo s made worse when people double and triple park outside the nearby shops. People are edging out, and then you get cars flying past, said a local resident, who wishes to remain anonymous. Police say that they are currently investigating the sign with a view to removing it soon. On top of this they say they have introduce a new speed limit in the area of 20mph instead of 30mph. We would urge people to respect the new 20mph speed limit in place at Highercroft. ldquo Lancashire Constabulary are working together with the council to address concerns raised by residents to ensure compliance to speed limits. ldquo We can, and will, enforce in 20mph areas, but we would look at other tactics including education and engineering before carrying our enforcement activity. Figures for the road suggest that car accidents are at an all time low, however Police promised locals they would not get complacent.

Halliwell Road was closed in both directions at the Blackburn Road junction at 10 30am. Police put temporary diversions in place while emergency structural engineers went to work on Motorworld rsquo s wall, following fears that it may collapse onto the road. Shop owner Stuart James said he came in to work as usual to find that his wall had a large crack down it, and that a flag pole had moved. Heavy winds and persistent rain are thought to have caused the damage. I don rsquo t think I rsquo ll be working any time soon, he said. We are hoping to get the wall down and rebuild it quickly so we can get trading again. Drivers faced huge tailbacks and delays as they were guided round busy diversions.

Lancashire's Derelict Buildings Being Used as Illegal Dumping Grounds

Derelict buildings across Lancashire are being used as illegal dumping grounds for waste the Environment Agency has confirmed. A specialist team of officers have now been enlisted to combat the illegal and dangerous dumping that is putting legitimate traders out of business, and damaging local communities. 5 year jail sentences and unlimited fines could be handed out to anyone caught in connection to the dumping the agency has warned. 105 properties are currently being investigated across the North West including 74 in Lancashire. Old cotton mills and empty houses have become home to piles of rubbish that make the area dangerous to residents and to the structure of the buildings themselves. The Environmental Agency said that building and demolition waste, used tyres, cars and car parts are the most common items found in these abandoned buildings. We have a committed team in the North West that is focused on identifying illegal waste sites and bringing about prosecutions where necessary to ensure the safe handling of waste in this region, rdquo said a spokesperson for the agency. Anyone with information has been told to contact the Environmental agency on 0800 80 70 60, or by messaging them on Twitter envagencynw
